Birmingham is known for its rich Civil Rights history and cultural significance. It is the perfect backdrop for our family gathering. And, Birmingham is affectionately called the Magic City so we intend to spark that magic while you are here.
The weekend festivities will kick off on Thursday evening July 3rd as we welcome you to the city when you pick up your registration package at the Hilton Hotel, our host hotel, located at 808 20th St S, Birmingham, AL 35205 (205) 933-9000. Our block of 30 rooms with discounted rates are available until June 1 or until those rooms are all taken so go ahead and reserve your room at the Hilton Hotel or view other nearby hotels. We will have food and beverages waiting for you in the hospitality suite when you pick up your registration material.
On Friday, 4th of July, we will have a fun filled day for the entire family. We'll start with the family picnic at Oak Mountain State Park located at 200 Terrace Dr, Pelham, AL 35124 where laughter, delicious food and joyful conversation will fill the air. There is a man-made beach, swimming lake, volleyball net, canoes, walking trails, shade trees and paddle boats on site. This is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with relatives near and far, share stories, and create lasting memories together.
As you travel back to the Hilton to unwind, we will soon join others at the top level of the Hilton Hotel parking deck to enjoy the Magic City's 4th of July fireworks celebration starting at 9:00 pm. Arrive early because this is a popular place for viewing. You do not want to miss this.
On Saturday, take a rest or make plans to visit some of Birmingham’s iconic landmarks and learn about the historical events that have helped to shape the lives of African Americans. You may have seen historical images of dogs and water hoses being used to attack non-violent protesters right here in Birmingham. As a result, there was a nationwide public outcry that provoked Pres. John F. Kennedy to propose Civil Rights legislation that ultimately became the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That Act opened America's social, economic, and political system to African Americans and other minorities, including women and the disabled.
Later Saturday evening we will gather for our relaxing and entertaining family banquet. It will be a night of celebration of love and appreciation for our shared family heritage. Let’s dress in our finest denim, diamond like accessories, dunk sneakers and enjoy a soothing feast while reminiscing about our ancestors triumphs and reflecting on the strength and unity that has carried our family for years.
On Sunday morning we will join for a worship service at the Hilton Hotel. One of our very own family ministers will bring the Word as family members come together for prayer, gratitude and worship. This will be a time of spiritual reflection to help us ground ourselves, appreciate our blessings and seek guidance for the future as we continue to build upon the legacy left by those who came before us.
Family, may this reunion be filled with much needed love, laughter and cherished memories that will warm our hearts for generations to come.
With Love and Anticipation,
